CORONA VIRUS ALERT
Whilst tourists volumes remain low in Split, we have taken the decision to temporarily close our office premises but we remain very much OPEN FOR BUSINESS and will return to a full schedule of tours on July 15 2020.
Due to the Corona Virus, we at Gecko Tours follow advice issued by the Croatian Government and have put in place measures to ensure social distancing and clean, safe travels at all time.
Why Travel With Us:
We are an independent, owner managed, Anglo/Croatian business with proven skills in the delivery of high quality tours. We are passionate about this incredible and stunningly diverse part of the world – our home – and would love to show you around to impart some of that magic to you.
All our employed guides are graduates and deeply experienced professionals. They are employed on the basis of their language skills, passion and enthusiasm for this area. We own all our own comfortable, smart vehicles which are fully equipped with WIFI and AC. Our tours are all small group, safe learning experiences, created for people who want to have fun exploring and enjoying everything Croatia and the Balkans has to offer. Our story is still being written…
Our Story So Far …
This year will be our fifth full year of operations and we are pleased to say we’ve gone from strength to strength – this last year we escorted over 12,000 guests across our various tour options…
In 2020, following our successful running of a number of multi-day tours over the years we are very excited to launch our Balkan Excursions programme – we are confident this will allow us to showcase the beauty of the Balkans and its various cultures.
We aim to provide excellent small group, interactive, guided tours of this region, focusing on the varied but undeniably rich cultural and gastronomic traditions that abound throughout this beautiful area.
We endeavour to showcase the people, the culture, the music and the rhythm of Croatia and the beautiful Balkans in an authentic and informative manner.
“I’m the managing director and founder of Gecko Tours and the proud father of the cutest pigeon in the world and now I’m working on my flock with the recent addition of another beautiful baby daughter. I was born and raised within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace – I may not have quite attained Diocletians emperor status but I do maintain the gardens within the palace. Once I was a sports fanatic and now its just food fanaticism for me. I’m always willing to share details of some of the area’s many peculiarities with tourists and my enthusiams for all things Dalmatian knows no bounds – that’s why I enjoy working in tourism.”
”This time next year, we’ll all be millionaires Rodney.”- Del-Boy, from “Only Fools and Horses”
The youngest member of the Gecko team – Magdalena – Baldo’s daughter. She’s wishing the rain away but doesn’t yet know that Split has on average 2620 sunny hours per year putting it in the top class in the Mediterranean
“I’m a graduate in Tourism Operations and Project Management from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Split. I spent 6 months in Riga, Latvia as part of an Erasmus+ program with Riga Technical University and still look back on this as part of a real life fairy tale. My interests include: meeting different people and cultures, traveling the world, working as a steward at summer night dog shows and making cheeseburgers disappear in a minute and then going on a guilt trip workout. Whilst you will often find me behind the desk in one of our Gecko Split offices ready to explain our many tours on offer, I’m also a qualified Split tour guide so sometimes I will take one of our fantastic tours …”
‘’The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.’’- Saint Augustine
“Hello, I`m Anamarija and I`ve spent most of my life away from Split. I did my bachelors` in economics and management at Zagreb School of Economics and Management. During this period I spend some time in USA and lived in Barcelona for 6 months where I took couple of classes. I did my master in Lisbon, Portugal at ISCTE Business School where I spent 1 incredible year of my life. My interests are exploring different parts of the world and experiencing different cultures, singing excessively loud, creating and eating desserts and outdoor activities. After long time away from home I decided to come back and pursue my career and life here in the most beautiful city in the world – Split “
‘’Great things never came from comfort zones’’- Anonymous
“Howdy folks! My name is Tonči and I’m a graduate in English and Russian teaching, but I’ve always been a big history buff ever since I was a child. Therefore, becoming a guide was a really logical decision connecting many of my passions such as, the before mentioned love for history, but also music, cultural heritage, trivia and especially, food! I will be more than happy to share all of my knowledge with you, including my most precious knowledge: the authentic Dalmatian recipes that I inherited from my grandmothers”
‘’There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers.’’- Colin Powell
“Beside having tour guiding skills and experience, I consider myself pretty skilled at managing children. As a father of twins, I had no other choice. If you’re taking your child on a tour, no worries, extra hands are included. Less importantly, I mastered Geography and Cultural anthropology at University of Zadar. Experience of those subjects shaped my prime interest, other cultures. Looking forward to meeting you, learning about your culture and introducing you to my own”
’’Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself”- George Bernard Shaw
“I was born and raised in Split but because of my enthusiasm, at the age of 19 I joined a Japanese cruise ship to work and explore new cultures and different nationalities. I’ve travelled all around the world and learnt a great deal about tourists and what interests them as well as visiting many different destinations. I came back to Split and decided to study tourism. My hobbies are learning the Japanese language, travelling and photography”
“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence”
“Hi! I’m Jadran. I was born in Split and have spent my whole life here. From a very early age I developed a passion for history which led me to study history at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split. There, I studied and broadened my knowledge of local history. Also, I learned to teach and talk about history in a fun and informative way. Besides history, I also received a degree in philosophy which allows me to connect and understand people with different cultural backgrounds. Also, I enjoy cooking (and eating) local foods. ”
““If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in the dark with a mosquito.” – Betty Reese”
“Hi, I’m Nikolina. I’m an economist by profession. I am proud of my Neretva origin (a very fertile agricultural area some 2-hour drive south of Split) and my present “imperial address” – you would not believe it, but I live right in the heart of Diocletian’s Palace.
I used to play music, but music, as it happens, was replaced by the enjoyment of motherhood. Specifically, I have two young children and like many married women, I also have one adult child (and what a beautiful photo of that child above 🙂 …).
My role at Gecko is to ensure that the daily finances of Gecko run smoothly and that all guides have the necessary funds for tour disbursements etc – in that way, if I’m doing my job well, you shouldn’t even notice I’m there!!”
“It’s not important to have a bunch of people around, it’s important to have the right ones. ” – Đorđe Balašević
“I was born in Sussex in the UK and studied at Sussex University in Brighton where I graduated in French and Spanish, achieving a masters degree. If these are your languages of choice I’m here to help! As my degree choice may indicate I am fascinated in other cultures and love meeting people from all over the world. My choice of career in the tourist industry therefore plays to my strengths. My hobbies include foreign languages – I’m learning Croatian though some way to go, and enjoying good food and yes some wine …”
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime””
Marija Gabrijela Topić (“Gaby”)
“Hi! I’m Gaby! I was born and raised in Split, but I studied English and Italian language and literature at University in Zagreb, obtaining a Master’s degree. After graduation I went to England to have my first work experience as a teaching assistant at a boarding school. After a year, due to my homesickness, I returned to my hometown and I’ve never regretted it. Since then I have been an English and Italian teacher in several schools in Split. Having always been fascinated by the past times and our cultural heritage, a logical step was to became a licensed tour guide. I have a strong passion for teaching and I can’t wait to share all my knowledge with you – but don’t worry, I won’t give you a test at the end of the tour! 😉 “
“ Everyone would like to extend life, when instead it should expand.” (Luciano de Crescenzo)
“Hi everyone, my name is Petra and you’ll recognise me from a distance because I’m over 6ft tall!! Born and raised here in Split and currently studying Speech Language Therapy in Zagreb. Not only do I adore where I come from, but I also make it my mission to show you why, so that you can see what I see. Ever since elementary school, I have been fascinated by history, foreign languages and cultures, hence my desicion to become a tour guide in order to share that with people. I also enjoy cooking, camping in nature (long-time scout) and travelling“
“No amount of money ever bought a second of time.” (Tony Stark, Endgame)
“Hi everyone! I’m Jelena, a local and simple girl that was born and raised in Split city center! I saw my colleague Tonci described himself as “the history buff” so I will steal this term from him, because I am the same. Also, since I started talking I couldn’t keep my mouth shut, so naturally, becoming a guide wasn’t such a tough choice 🙂
I speak English and French, and my professional life has taken me in different directions; I lived and worked in France, I was a stewardess on motor yachts etc.
When the season in Split ends, I become a world traveler! My plan, one day, is to sail the world and explore every single bit of it!
I spend my days in nature, hiking with my pets, eating, drinking some great local wines, and honestly, I think there is no problem in this world that a glass of wine, some nice music and friends cannot resolve!
Cheers to all of you and let me show you my city in all it’s aspects!“
“And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” (Friedrich Nietzsche)
“Hello, my name is Frane. I’m an electronics expert, but I don’t do this job as it involves much indoor work so I’ve decided to work with an even stronger current at Gecko tours. I’ve been working since I was seven years old, and I decided it was time to try something new. Because I don’t like to sit in enclosed spaces, one of the solutions was to become a driver, which I did. Electricity is still a great love and a passionate hobby of mine. I have seen beautiful lands and places but best of all I’ve met so many beautiful and dear people … “
“Man, make sure you don’t go under the stars” – A.B. Šimić
“I’ve worked as a driver for 47 years. I’ve travelled almost all of Europe. I love my job because I meet new people and go to many places. My favourite hobby is mechanics. In my free time, I enjoy good food, holidays by the sea or a rural retreat. My attitude to my job is the same as to life generally i.e. to perform with dedication and patience and always be ready to help others.”
”Life is a game, play it!” – Mother Theresa
“I am an engineer from the Faculty of Textile Technology in Zagreb. How we interact with each other and respect people is a critical to me. I had an aversion to traffic and vehicles but ever since I got my driver`s licence I’ve worked as a taxi driver. Since then, I have spent a lot of time in the car and I realized that I really love it. Driving relaxes me and I do not see it as a job so much as therapy! Because of this and my desire to progress in my career I decided to join this ambitious agency.”
”Push yourself because no one else is going to do it for you!” – Annonymous
