OUR COMMUNITY

We at Gecko Tours are committed to putting back something into the community that we live in and that ultimately supports us all.

With this in mind, every year we engage with local schools and run our ex-gratia programme (“Get to Know Your City”) to encourage local school kids to better understand the life, history and times of their home city of Split.

Each year, we run a series of free, fully guided historical school trips around Split each year for a variety of local student ages. We aim to combine fun elements with a good grounding in the historical significance of Split. In this way, through an early appreciation of the beauty and heritage of Split, we hope to preserve its buildings and environment for generations to come.

The most engaged and “best behaved” class (judged without fear or favour by our MD, Baldo Djanovic!!) gets to enjoy our full day Salona, Klis and Trogir tour which provides the kids with a fascinating insight into ancient life in Split through the medieval period to the present day.

We also periodically run free trips for the Split Blind Society to provide away days and encourage our blind community to enjoy many of the wonderful things on Split’s doorstep.

We are always looking for opportunities to put things back into our local community – particularly disadvantaged or vulnerable members of our community – so please do let us know if you have a need that we should consider.

OUR ENVIRONMENT

We understand the importance of protecting our world and oceans and the incredible life that exists within. We also understand that as a company involved with increasing levels of tourism globally and particularly in Croatia, we have a direct responsibility to our environment:

• We have dispensed with the unnecessary use of plastic, particularly plastic water cups.
• Our larger vehicles are all now limited to run at the most fuel effective levels.
• We have stopped producing and distributing paper tour information“flyers”. These can litter the city and diminish the appearance of our city.

Whilst our insistence on smaller tour groups sizes goes some way to encouraging sustainable tourism in and around Split, we acknowledge that we all have some way to go to making sustainable tourism a global reality …

Therefore we work with Carbon Footprints and encourage our guests to give something back to reduce their carbon footprint, if they wish. Carbon Footprints, a highly credited UK-based organisation, offers calculators for travel by air, car, motorbike, bus and rail and an easy payment method for carbon offset. Projects that you can choose to contribute towards include planting trees in the UK, reforestation in Kenya and the Americas and community-based projects that provide clean drinking water and efficient cooking stoves around the world.

We provide a link to CARBON FOOTPRINTS – just select your country, select mode of travel, enter the distance travelled (see below) and make payment …
